Our Region

Gillamii’s operational area is part of the South Coast Natural Resource Management (NRM) region, which overlaps with the Great Southern regional development jurisdiction. The region is further divided into subregions of Kent Frankland, Albany Hinterland, North Stirlings Pallinup, Fitzgerald Biosphere, Esperance Mallee and Esperance Sandplain, with the Gillamii centre representing the Kent Frankland subregion.

The South Coast NRM region extends over more than 8.6 million hectares along the southern coastline of Western Australia, including 8000 hectares of islands and 1 million hectares of State waters. As part of the one of only 35 internationally recognised biodiversity hotspots, the region is home to an extremely diverse range of landscapes from tall forests in the west, pristine coastlines in the south, all of Southern WA’s mountain peaks and many wetlands, waterways and estuaries.

Much of the inland areas have been cleared, with agricultural industries occupying 70% of the regions’ total area. They are an important part of the local economy, together with forestry, fisheries, mining, tourism and other rural industries.

The region contains major Aboriginal cultural heritage assets including the culturally significant natural environments of the Stirling Ranges and the Fitzgerald Biosphere sub-region, with the Aboriginal Noongar/Nyungar people being the first people to occupy the South Coast region.
