SaltDECK Native Revegetation Guide

Period: 2024
Funding Body: State NRM
Funds: $34,046.00
Project Officers: Freya Spencer

Summary

The Saltland Genie WebApp contains a set of interactive tools designed to assist land managers understand salinity and utilise plant-based systems to remediate salt affected land. One of the resources integrated into the Genie is the SALTdeck, containing information on salt-tolerant pasture species and their potential uses.

Since the Genie’s launch, areas for further development have been identified, one being the development of a SALTdeck for native revegetation species. Current resources lack critical information to support land managers in establishing successful native systems. A SALTdeck of saltland revegetation species for SW WA is essential for continued, large-scale saltland remediation.

Objectives & Outcomes

  • With improved on-farm decision making tools, supporting land managers to find solutions to on-farm salinity, we will see an overall increase in productivity and sustainability through improved soil health, water management, biodiversity, and productivity of marginal lands. The SALTdeck will help land managers to put the right deeprooted perennial species in the right place. These systems will, in-turn, use both ground and surface water, protect water assets, reduce erosion and improve soil health and increase onfarm biodiversity, increasing the lands overall productivity.

  • The SALTdeck will be integrated into the Genie, which is digitally and publicly available. This, in collaboration with the other decision-making tools in the WebApp, is designed to build the skills and capacity of land managers in site assessment, planning and establishment of perennial saltland systems - on their own farms, in their own time. Overall Gillamii’s outcome through undertaking this project is to continue to support land managers combat salinity, one patch at a time.
